DC Universe MMO to hit the PS3
Sat, Jul 26, 2008
I have been really busy this past week and finally i got some free time now to write a post. Hopefully, no one is mad at me for not posting anything last week.

DC; creators of Superman, Batman and many more have announced that they will be releasing a new MMO for the PS3 and PC.
Now to me, this is a breakthrough. Gamers have been waiting for this since gaming went online; until now it has only been a dream. But now it’s a dream come true. MMO’s are finally hitting the console market!
In case you don’t know, an MMO, also known as an MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, which kind of suggests why it’s been abbreviated. It gives the opportunity for players to go online, carry out activities and advance through the game. Players can participate in quests and join friends to play aside, fight, or even have a bit of a chat.
The revolution comes as Sony and DC announced at Comic Con that there will be a new game taking to the streets, best thing is, these are streets embellished by superheroes, your superheroes. DC is giving gamers the chance to customize their own superheroes, or even villains, to fight alongside the icons from the movies and magazines. They’re calling it DC Universe Online.
What to expect…
Thanks to the versatility of the Blu-Ray disc we can expect the game to be just as rich as the comics. So far the screenshots of scenery appear to be extraordinary and the ability to enter battle with rivals, enemies and the odd arch-nemesis seems like an exciting concept.
The game has been described as a ‘kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a classic first person shooter’ by one of the games makers. But what does this mean? This is a system that has been invented already by games such as Dark fall which is nearing completion to open up the skill level of playing MMO’s. Rather than long lengths of game play determining your power, you can dive right onto the scene and take your world by storm, purely through being highly skillful!
Despite the new concept of skill being used there will of course be the usual leveling up. For the audience who aren’t too familiar with the MMO genre; this involves playing a lot until your character reaches a certain experience to advance onto almost a new stage in which they can learn new spells, skills and participate in more events. Skills can then be used to fight stronger monsters/characters or just to feel your power on newbie’s!
Due to the change of platform (Most games of the genre being PC only) there is also set to be a lot of changes from tradition. There is set to be less party raids, with an increase of arena battles, where it’s all against all, or team style action. The arenas can also feature boss battles.
In Conclusion…
The game is one big exciting prospect. It looks as if we are set to see a new mainstream competitor with the big boys of MMO such as World of Warcraft and Diablo makers Blizzard. I assume producers will be EA, a company with high standards and more hopefully; we will many more releases of its kind to come.
