Bill Gates has stepped down from his job at Microsoft to focus on his charity work and after being a visionary and a role model for lots of computer enthusiasts, he has finally decided to call it a day.

He announced his decision to retire from the company last year, and his last day seems to be quite different from the very first day he and partner Paul Allen produced DOS for IBM in 1980.

Gates has not been the pivotal figure at Microsoft for some time, with the likes of Ray Ozzie and his old friend Steve Ballmer becoming more influential as his attention had switched to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

How influential Bill Gates was and will be?

Bill Gates influence on Microsoft will be the lowest ever and although he will be checking up on smaller projects, his attention on a day to day basis will never be there again.

During school days, it was Gates and Allen’s decision to cling onto the rights of their DOS program which was developed under the radar of IBM had ultimately led to their dominance over the growth of this industry over the last 30 years. Gates and Allen licensed their MS-DOS to the host of manufacturers looking to build their own versions of IBM’s PC and it gave them the opportunity to do something on their own and that lead to the birth of Microsoft.

The Reign of Microsoft with Windows

Windows, a graphical interface for their MS DOS and the Operating System, was the next major landmark for Microsoft, and soon became it became the operating system in every computer in the world.

However, things have not been smooth sailing for Bill Gates. With a high-profile anti-trust case over the bundling of internet explorer cost the company millions of dollars, the recent failure of Windows Vista’s inability to match XP’s success and the major internet powerhouse being Google has all put Microsoft’s future in a doubt.

Will this be the end of Microsoft’s legacy with the PC? Or Did Bill Gates kind of knew this was going to happen and he decided to retire at the right time?
