Has the Blu-Ray vs DVD Format War come to an end?

Tech News

It has finally come. The evidence that the Blu-Ray and HD market has been waiting for. Blu-Ray hardware (Blu-Ray players similar to DVD players, and the formidable PS3) is outselling DVD sales from the same early stages at about six-fold!

After mentioning few weeks that XBOX 360 will be getting a Blu-Ray upgrade, it’s now becoming apparent that Blu-Ray and the HD markets are really gathering so-called momentum. Sales are reaching a massive 10 million milestone whereas DVD players only reached a dismal comparison of, 1.5 million at the same point in its life cycle. I’m pretty sure everyone with a current age of over 12 years old will probably know that the DVD and it’s extraordinary player took the world by storm, wiping, the now ancient, VHS off of the chart; but now the sun is probably setting on the DVD too. The Colossal company, Sony, and their Blu-Ray only recently outclassed the rival Toshiba’s HD-DVD; and more recently, PS3 sales have been shooting through the roof with recent release of the long awaited Metal Gear Solid 4, giving the Japanese firm a 2-0 score over Americans’ Microsoft.

Blu-Ray wins format War

A Clear indication…?

It’s not been several years since the announcement that there was a new name in town, and high definition was going to make its mark on history. Sony were quick to make their mark on the new format, HD TV’s were the first. It wasn’t long before the PS3 came about and the Blu-Ray’s part in domination of the HD world fell into place. The reason for which Blu-Ray players selling so much doesn’t wholly depend on HDTV owners, the PS3 means everyone can own a player, even if you’re not using it to play Blu-Ray discs and watching movies with the format.

The Blu-Ray sales have been questioned and scrutinized many times, but are this crystal clear piece of evidence? Probably not! Many people who currently own a PS3, as I already have stated, own a Blu-Ray player, HDTV or no HDTV. The Blu-Ray is now the lone-ranger for the HD movie market but other formats are still in play in other fields. Microsoft still are holding their own with many exclusive games being released on their smaller but cheaper discs, the XBOX has a massive grip on the gaming market and despite predictions that the PS3 is, or will be, outselling the XBOX by 2 to 1 in some parts of the world, the 360 can still hold on. But for now, Blu-Ray is on the rise.

The Next Frontier!

The questions on my lips are now, what will be the next frontier for Sony? Well the immediate ambition of the giants is to thwart the XBOX for a second time, this will be enhanced as more PS3 exclusives are being released, and Gran Tourismo and Tekken promising much prospect. An ultimate grip is currently held on the movie market future and more PS3 sales; with the addition of an expanding HD market means this is inevitable.

So now it’s over to you! What do you think of the evidence? Hardcore, crystal-clear and as brutal as evidence as they get? Or just a few PS3 sales in the bag?

I was having this discussion with a family member the other day and I was anti blue ray and he loved the idea! I just don’t see the point when it comes to the blue ray. I think movies on dvd look great so why make us waste more money then we have to. People in our economy can’t even afford to live let along by a new tv and blue ray player for movies!

I think blue ray should be dropped it’s just silly!

Simply my opinion and it won’t change!

If Sony thinks I’m going to re-buy my whole library (100+) DVD titles again on Blu-Ray, for $25+ each, they are insane.

I have an up-converting DVD player and a nice, new LCD TV, and I am satisfied.

I can’t wait to buy $2 DVDs though, when the stores start clearing them out. There are 25+ titles I want, but aren’t willing to pay current prices for.

    This will be really cool!
