Is it possible to earn a living Blogging?

When some blogger mentions “Make Money Online”, the first impression everyone gets is that the money comes mainly from blogs as the blogger mentioned it in his blog and you know that he is a successful blogger. I notice that most people get into blogging because they feel that they can earn lots of money online and even go to the extend of thinking that they can make a living through it. This is not entirely true. After seeing the Top bloggers minting cash, almost everyone on the internet has their own blog now. As a result, lots of people making blogs without even knowing what to blog about.
So, is it possible to earn a living Blogging?
I don’t think its entirely possible. You can earn good money blogging but unless you blog on for a lot of sites, you aren’t going to reach anywhere. If you notice the Top bloggers, they all have one thing in common. They all have many income streams. They have a successful blog plus many other projects from which they earn more money and having blogged about it on their blog, they were able to create a buzz and hence became successful. One should also keep in mind that when all the top bloggers started blogging they were the lone rangers doing it, so the chances of them capitalizing on it was very good. They were smart and intelligent enough to pounce on the opportunity they got to educate people whether for the good or bad I don’t know frankly.
I believe Luck plays a huge role in getting everything right at the right time. Keeping Blogging aside, I think its definitely possible to earn a living online. You can start an online business of some sort and earn loads of money. Its just all about applying yourself positively and giving it your best shot.
Why blogging for money is a step in the wrong direction?
To make money blogging, you need a successful blog, Time and lots of hard work. So, if any of the mentioned ingredients are low in quantity, you just won’t make it. Blogging has become really competitive over the last few years. Don’t risk losing your time and energy blogging for money if you aren’t sure how to go about it. That itself shows your whole approach is wrong and you should not even attempt doing it. Blogging is not all about writing only. It has become more or less like a game of Chess where every move has diverse results. Never lose focus of what is to be achieved from your blog and if you think its money, I doubt it if you will ever get hold of some, to say the least.
Has anyone wondered that if any of those Top Bloggers had just started blogging this year or so, Would their blog be so successful as it is today?

Thanks for the insights. I think many of the popular blogs started before there was masses of competition, which is why they grew quickly. Still, it’s possible to make decent money blogging, but it IS hard work!

I think you can “get all your ducks in a row”, if you study the (free) posts of a couple of the top Gurus, I mean Court’s Internet Marketing School and makemoneyforbeginners.blogspot.com. I have been putting into practice what I have learned here and my visitor count/income has boomed.

I agree with partly what you say, and also disagree at the same time.
Yes, making money from blogging is hard to do if you don’t know how to do it, but yet so is everything else if you don’t know how to go about it.
But don’t think I’m trying to “bash” you or anything. I totally agree with you.
Not many people make money blogging. In fact, blogging is just a mere form of internet marketing. You can’t make money from just putting up posts about random crap, and expect to receive cash.
You need to create products, or promote products that aren’t yours. PPC ads won’t get bloggers far, but creating their own products, or promoting other people’s products will.
Blogs are just a way to market something. Not to make money. So I agree with you saying that you can’t make money from blogging. But I don’t agree with you saying that people shouldn’t waste their time blogging.
It’s a wonderful way to market products.

I didnt mean to say blogging is a total waste. What i meant was when you blog with the aim of only earning money, it just won’t work cos you tend to focus on a smaller picture and not the bigger picture. So, one shouldnt waste their time blogging just to earn money or because someone else is doing it.
Be Passionate about what you blog and only then will success reach you.

Hi there,
Interesting post. I believe that if your sole intention is to make money from a blog, then the chances are you’re going to be disappointed!
For me, blogging is about writing about a subject which you are genuinely interested in, or excited about, and you can see that the top bloggers around all have the same main ingredient: passion.
Earning a living from blogging is the effect, writing about something you love is the cause, and not the other way around!

Argh…
Why are you telling me this now!! lol - I’m trying and yes it is harder than the ‘pro bloggers’ make it out to be.
The problem is they promote it as quick and easy to sell stuff, create a buzz, get traffic whatever.
That’s a little bit like giving chocolate to someone and telling them you wont get fat. Bit of a crude example, but you get the idea?!
