How to get a high PR doing nothing?

Few days back I wrote a post Secrets to becoming a rich and successful Blogger and if you noticed carefully I never mentioned anything about PR. There are 2 kinds of people in the Internet whose views on Page Rank (PR) are as different as 2 sides of the same coin.

1. Those who think PR is extremely necessary for a site to succeed. Why? Because PR is what defines a page strength which plays an important role in search engine rankings for any post. So higher the PR, higher the position of your post for a particular keyword.
2. People who don’t care or bother about their PR. They do what they know best, that is creating good quality content.
So which group is actually right here?
The answer is No:2. Although, people belonging to group 1 are partially correct, they are not entirely correct. The reason being people who have PR0 site/blog but have good content have managed to get the first page searches many times. Taking this blog as an example, except for 1-2 of my posts, the rest are all within the first 2 pages on Google for the main keywords related to the posts and my PR is 0. I know people who have PR5 blogs and their content is never on the first 5 pages. So how is that possible?
There is no secret in it at all. Its your Content which will get you the traffic and the backlinks you need.
My movie site ReelSuave just got a PR4 few days back from a PR of 1. I was quite surprised because I never exchanged nor bought any links from a higher PR site. What happened was the content on the site was so unique and of good quality in terms of the english language used that many other movie blogs actually mentioned about few of the posts which are one of its kind on the internet. Yes, you heard it right “One of a Kind”. Few articles were soo unique that if you search for them there will be hardly 3-4 articles on the same topic. So many blogs found it really good to trackback to resulting in high PR backlinks from PR3-5.
So what do you need to do to make sure you keep getting a High PR each time Google Updates.
1. PR is not King - I keep saying this again and again and I still emphasize that your site or blog is not getting anywhere without quality gripping content. If you have catchy article, without any effort, it will surely be in Google top 2-3 pages. Google in no way is partial to High PR blogs. If you have good PR but your content is pathetic then no way are you going to get any traffic from Google.
2. Don’t waste time on PR - If you have good content, you will surely get good pingbacks from good sites. I am not discouraging anyone from building links but build links to get good traffic back to your site and not for getting a high PR.
3. Never Buy or Sell Links - Biggest Mistake made by High PR site owners. They sold text links on their site and their PR have dropped a lot. Google always has an eye on the entire net, so be careful not to get penalised especially if your blog is brand new.
4. Don’t Divert your Focus - Your aim is to build your blog and the only way your blog can grow is by having good content. PR is not going to make your blog a success. I see lots of bloggers who just started a blog and gone about getting high PR backlinks without hardly having 2-3 posts on their blog. Spend your time on link building for traffic which i will surely discuss in the coming days.
5. Strong Backlinks - Natural Linking is what ensures your blog or page gets a Strong PR. A site having High PR can have low traffic and in the eyes of Google might not be strong. Getting a backlink from weak sites will make Google think your site too is weak and so your PR won’t be strong and will go down as quickly as it went up.
So what is the point of having a High PR when your blog has little or no content or has content no one even reads. In that case, it doesn’t matter if your PR 0 or PR 10. If you keep the above points in mind, one day you will end up getting a good strong PR. There is a fine line between building links for traffic and building links for PR. The time you spend on getting backlinks from High PR sites can be used wisely to produce some Good Quality Content instead.

Good insight. Build good content or offer great service and the traffic will come.

Good post. If we do not sell links on website or blog then the only option is to get money is adsense or affiliate program which is very hard to get. You need heavy traffic to work with them.

I agree with everything in this post except for #5. While there are literally thousands of routes to take for link building, I will be the first to admit that I take a lot of shortcuts. I do not focus on my PR, but I focus on writing quality content and then combining that with a solid link building campaign, which is what has yielded some great results for my blog.
Other than that, great post and I completely agree. Build links for traffic from clicks and search engines, not for some number Google made up.

Hey Collin, really pleased to see you here. Thanks for coming by.
I wrote this post mainly to put some sense into new bloggers who first sit and waste time building links to their sites with no content to back it up.
Thanks for all the encouraging comments everyone….

Hey great post, I somewhat disagree though, I think getting your PR up there does actually help. You get quality visitors from searches.

i have same experience..
one of my websites with PR3 as of today but having very less traffic.
i never update my website but PR keep improving from 2-3..this is funny
indexed by Search Engine (Google, Yahoo and MSN) in less than 24hrs and awarded with PR2 within two-three weeks (not really sure..but very quick).
actually, this ‘funny’ website just loaded with few PLR and junk articles at beginning and never updated but still awarded with good PR.
so, keep in mind.
PR doesn’t give you traffic..and without traffic, who can promise a money from your site?
Work for traffic, don’t work for PR.
I Proved It!…
At least for me.

It just proves one more time that content is a king. Write good and traffic will come as someone said above.

I got hit pretty hard from purchasing links at digital point! I was expected to see a pr of 5 and stayed at three. I guess we learn the hard way!
See it’s a catch 22 in my opinion!
#1. I want to buy links it’s a great way to promote your website.
#2. You get punished from Google by doing so.
Catch 22, Page rank, or traffic.
what do you pick…

This was a really good post. I still consider myself a newbie as far as blogging and I have to admit that I thought PR was super important. I have a few blogs and the PR of each one is so different I could not understand it. I really appreciate the way you explained your take on the whole PR thing.

Good post,
It’s very logic, good content, a nicely written post. I would add the idea: to insert a little picture in the article, a good picture choice can always help for your traffic. .

Thumbs up for a great post! PR is NOT king, good content on the other hand will get you a good ranking. I just wrote a great article on a similar topic.

My blog has a PR0, yet I still get traffic from keyword searches. I’m not overly concerned about PR, although I do check it periodically for improvement. I’m definitely more concerned about producing a quality blog with good, original content that people like to read.

Totally agree with you. PR is important but creating great content is even more important than chasing high PRs. Besides, Google loves to see sites and blogs that have natural growth and that could only be achieved by providing good content.

Nice summary, however, not everyone can write “Good Quality Content”. There are millions of webmasters for whom English is a second language. Now, you will say that they should hire a writer? Writing “good quality content”, (oh how people loves to preach that phrase), also requires knowledge of a subject and creativity.
So, what is your answer for these people?

I would say to those people not to take up blogging….start a site selling something….Cos if you wanna be a success in blogging, you need good content….if you cant produce good content might as well dont blog just because you see people around you blogging….
Know your strengths and do something related to that….

i too think that PR is not much valuable ..
as one of my sites with PR 5 gets less visitors and the other site with PR2 and PR 0 gets huge traffic and good serp too …
so its better to maintain the site with usefull and uniqueness for our visitors and for search engines too.

Oh yes, it happens many times that a low pr page outranks a higher one. Sometimes it also has to do with anchor text backlinks though.
