Radiohead nails down Digital Distribution
Thu, May 1, 2008

Well, after all the hype about DRM free digital distribution of Radiohead’s Album “In Rainbows”, Thom Yorke has said that it was a big mistake and so their next album will be a normal traditional release. Nine Inch Nail’s have already gone down the same path, and just last week Lars Ulrich from Metallica said they plan to do the same soon.
Thome Yorke in an interview to Hollywood Reporter, has said that, “It was a one-off reponse to a particular situation”. He also stated that, “One of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do. I don’t think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again”. And thus their next album will be a more conventional release.
Nine Inch Nails drummer Trent Reznor stated he felt that, “The way [Radiohead] parlayed it into a marketing gimmick has certainly been shrewd” and describing the project as “very much a bait and switch, to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale.” during an interview with the ABC in March.
The main reason for Radiohead to be force into making this decision was the high levels of piracy that took place. They wanted the fans to have direct access to their favorite bands albums first hand while taking down the middlemen aka the Music Industry.
Radiohead’s decision comes few days before Coldplay releases their new single “Violent Hill” online next week via DRM free digital distribution.
I think that bands are going about doing this to give their fans a say in their music. They want the fans to give first hand reviews of their album which is what the bands want to know as their music is meant for their fans and not for the Music industry.
So would you buy a High Quality Music download or buy the whole album from your nearby stores?
